| Name: | Garrus Vakarian |
|---|---|
| Website: | Turians at the Mass Effect Wiki |

| PERSONALITY: Garrus has been, on occasion, described as something of a hothead with an itchy trigger finger. He chafes under restriction, preferring to do things his own way, rather than "by the book". He has a strong sense of right and wrong, however, and most of his "outside the book" efforts go towards bringing the criminals to justice any way he can. When he is unable to do this, it eats at him, and is not lightly shaken off--failure does not agree with Garrus. Overall, he is a highly dedicated, loyal man, who would take action over sitting around talking in a crisis, and he highly respects those individuals who follow a similar sort of mindset. If you have his respect, and therefore, his loyalty, he will follow you to the ends of the earth. His mission goals are of the utmost importance in his mind, above all else, even the needs of others--save for those in his squad. Duty is important to him, and he is easily frustrated when he can't do what he has deemed to be his. Socially, he tends to be somewhat awkward, preferring to defer to a more courteous, formal conversation rather than in-depth heart-to-hearts. He does prefer order to chaos, and major changes send him back to his military upbringing, in that he will try to take control of the situation, if no chain of command is present, and bring things back to order. CANON HISTORY: Not much is known about him before his adulthood. He was born on the planet Palaven--the turian homeworld--and grew up in a culture heavily valuing civic duty, and honor. His father was a highly respected and decorated officer for Citadel Security, or C-Sec, which was, essentially, a highly qualified police force for a massive space station. Following military training and service at 15, Garrus joined C-Sec himself, becoming one of the top investigators as well. At one point in his past, he was selected as a candidate for an elite group of black-ops agents, known as Spectres. He was unable to follow through with the special training, due to pressure from his father. During his service with C-Sec, he took a case involving illegal organ cloning, and harvesting. Due to regulations, he was unable to catch the suspect, or have any closure in the case whatsoever. Shortly thereafter, he quit C-sec in order to follow Commander Shepard, the first human to be named Spectre, on a mission to save the galaxy from an invasion of synthetic creatures bent on the destruction of organic life. During this, his skills were sharpened, and his brash, impulsive nature was somewhat tamed down, thanks to the Commander's efforts. His work with Shepard made Garrus decide to once again seek out training to become a Spectre, once their mission was accomplished. LOCATIONS: |
| AU HISTORY: Not much is known about him before his adulthood. He was born on the planet Palaven--the turian homeworld--and grew up in a culture heavily valuing civic duty, and honor. His father was a highly respected and decorated officer for Citadel Security, or C-Sec, which was, essentially, a highly qualified police force for the Citadel, a massive, multi-racial space station. He was on a routine trip back home for personal reasons when one of the mass relays used for rapid transport around the galaxy misfired. Instead of Palaven, Garrus ended up on Earth. He probably would have ended up dead, or experimented on, had he not met a unique military unit--one used to and capable of dealing with odd incidents, made of a combination of top military agents from various countries on Earth. Instead of turning him in, the commander of the unit recognized his skills, and took Garrus aboard. After working with the group for a number of years, gradually accepting his new situation, and moving forward. The unit was responsible for a number of covert, and important missions throughout the years Garrus worked with them. The only problem arose when he developed feelings for the commander who had taken him in. Unfortunately, the commander was attached to another, and Garrus found it increasingly difficult to work effectively. He took his leave shortly after realizing how he felt. The commander and the rest of the unit pulled a number of strings, including figuring out a way to disguise him as human, creating a human identity for Garrus to enable him to carry on with his life outside of the close-knit and highly classified unit. Claiming to be a transfer from Hawaii, he moved to New York City, as it was the closest thing to his old home that he could find on Earth, without going to Tokyo--where his height would make him stick out far too much for comfort. He took a job as a police officer, another way of piecing together the life he'd left behind in that other galaxy. He did maintain contact with the unit through letters and emails, especially with their physician, who was a vital link, due to his inability to visit a regular hospital. Presently, he lives a fairly quiet life, keeping mostly to himself, and doing his best to stay under the radar as best he can. Living this kind of lie doesn't sit well with him, and even after four years of it, he's still not quite used to being human. | AU HISTORY: The turian people, being somewhat insular, rarely leave their island, Palaven, somewhere in the south Pacific, and are therefore almost unknown to people outside of the magical community. As a result, much of his childhood and adolescence are unknown, he rarely talks about them. What is known is that he was born to a family with a history of prestige in the field of law enforcement. He was expected to, and did, follow in his father's footsteps, becoming an investigator for the local police force. This was before he showed any aptitude or magical skill, and thus made his family proud, advancing in the ranks to become one of the top investigators for his people. Everything changed, however, with the arrival of a human Auror called Jane Shepard, and her team. They were charged with finding and eliminating a turian called Saren, an Auror representing the turians on the global magical scene. He was under suspicion of using dark powers, and raising an army of like-minded men in order to bring about mass genocide. Garrus was put in charge of providing Shepard and her team with whatever information he could find. However, given Saren's status, his files were all sealed, and nothing Garrus could do within the bounds of normal investigation proved him guilty. It was a member of Shepard's team, Kaidan Alenko, an accomplished wizard, who showed him some rather less than conventional means of finding evidence--magic. Garrus proved surprisingly adept at it, and embraced it as a way to finally achieve his goals. The turians, however, being a race that embraced laws wholeheartedly, rather frowned on such a thing, forcing Garrus to make a choice between what he deemed just, and continuing to serve his people. In the end, he joined up with the human woman, eventually becoming instrumental in her defeat of Saren. He received similar status to the deceased Saren and Shepard, and would have liked to continue serving with her. However, both decided it would be best to go their separate ways, due to sudden, unexpected issues in their working relationship. He was in love with her, and she with someone else. Ostracized from his family and people, he did a lot of work for the humans, until old injuries from the final battle with Saren forced him into early retirement, and he reluctantly took up a teaching job. He is also violently allergic to bananas. POSITION: DADA Instructor, former Auror. | AU HISTORY: The turian people, being somewhat insular, rarely leave their island, Palaven, somewhere in the south Pacific, and are therefore almost unknown to people in the outside world. The common theory being that their island was shielded from the same destruction that killed the dinosaurs by some sort of weird stroke of luck, and the turians are an incredibly evolved saurian species. If it weren't for a series of events requiring their help, the BPRD would have never even discovered them. As a result of this isolation, much of the events in Garrus' childhood and adolescence are unknown, and he rarely talks about them. What is known is that he was born to a family with a history of prestige in the field of law enforcement. He was expected to, and did, follow in his father's footsteps, becoming an investigator for the local police force. This was before he showed any signs of being unhappy with his position, and thus made his family proud, advancing in the ranks to become one of the top investigators among his people. And then came the Soveriegn Incident. While the rest of the world was oblivious to the turian people, they were less than clueless, having a group of special agents trained for the purpose of gathering information on the outside world, and helping preserve the turians' isolation by any means necessary. They were called Spectres. One such Spectre was Saren Arterius, and instead of preserving isolation, felt it best that humanity was wiped out, and the world made safe for the turian people as a result. His activities into summoning up just such a way to do that--one of the Ogdru Hem by the name of Soveriegn--threw up some red flags for both the BPRD, and Garrus Vakarian's law enforcement agency. The BPRD sent out a group of top agents--Jane Shepard and her team--to the site, where, after tense negotiations, they were able to open dialogue with the turians, and start to get a sense of the case. Frustrated by a lack of ability to inact change on his own, Garrus threw in his lot with the humans, which effectively blacklisted him among his own people, and, especially his family. He served under the agents for a year or so, eventually falling hard for the female agent, and team leader. However, due to her feelings for another man, he was unable to continue with her. Unable to return home to Palaven, Garrus remained with the BPRD, striving to be one of their top agents, and follow in the footsteps of the woman who he'd loved.
